Just One Resource - INTERACTIVE: Think You Can Pick Stocks?
In this new weekly blog post, Jessica will highlight Just One Resource from our NGPF collection that maybe doesn't get the attention it deserves. Use it this week or bookmark it for later. |
[The Resource] INTERACTIVE: Think You Can Pick Stocks?
The Gist: The Wall Street Journal has this fun little six-round game, where each round features four real companies' stock info, but the names are obscured so you're not sure which company is which. You pick the stock you think will do best with the limited information you have at your disposal, and then you see how the company has performed since 2006 compared to the other three and the S&P 500.
The Best Parts:
- Students get the fun of playing "expert" investor and trying to pick the highest performing stock, and they're using real data, but they don't know which company is which, so it's not as easy as it seems -- sort of like playing the real market
- This interactive's data output is written, numerical, and graphical, so it tests your students' literacy in three modes
- Of course, we've created a reflection worksheet to accompany the game, though it's a bit long for my taste. If I were using this in the classroom I'd probably select just a few of the questions for students to answer and then get some good discussion going around what they've learned
- Bonus: There's an Advanced Level you can play once the first round is over
