Planet Money on TikTok
Hat tip to Sawyer, my 19-year old, who keeps me in the know with that Gen-Z generation:)
They told me I had to check out Planet Money TikToks so I'm checking them out. Their description: Dad, It's like the Indicator podcasts, which are 9 minutes long, for Gen Z.
Here are a few I thought your students would enjoy:
- The Money Illusion
- Have someone in your family come up with an item they knew the price of 20 years ago. Use this calculator to see what that item would cost in today's dollars. Is that close to what that item costs today?
- How did the price of Coke stay at a nickel for 70 years? Watch (part 1 and part 2) and find out.
- Are there other products you can think of that have stayed at the same price for a long time?
- Banks are making billions off overdraft fees.
- If there's any good news here is that banks are increasingly doing away with these fees. Why? Blame the competition. Here's a FinCap Friday on the topic.
- Greater fool theory is often an explanation when the price of an asset far exceeds reasonable value. In this Planet Money TikTok, they use an NFT to demonstrate this concept.
- Are there examples of this theory that you have seen in your own life?
Enjoy!
About the Author
Tim Ranzetta
Tim's saving habits started at seven when a neighbor with a broken hip gave him a dog walking job. Her recovery, which took almost a year, resulted in Tim getting to know the bank tellers quite well (and accumulating a savings account balance of over $300!). His recent entrepreneurial adventures have included driving a shredding truck, analyzing executive compensation packages for Fortune 500 companies and helping families make better college financing decisions. After volunteering in 2010 to create and teach a personal finance program at Eastside College Prep in East Palo Alto, Tim saw firsthand the impact of an engaging and activity-based curriculum, which inspired him to start a new non-profit, Next Gen Personal Finance.
